When I started working with Dan, he'd never filed his year end accounts and treated his business like a trust fund.

There was no record of the past, just a bank statement with money in and money out.

I needed to demonstrate to Dan the cost to the business (and him personally) of not keeping a record of expenses. I put it in numbers on a spreadsheet. His attitude changed from, "Why do I have to do this?" to "How can we do this?". We set up a WhatsApp chat specifically for his receipts. Simple.

The next step was giving Dan visibility of future spend. I created a basic cashflow tracker that gave him the confidence and knowledge to prepare for tighter months. He reigned in his spending.

I supported team negotiations, acting as the mediator to achieve win-win outcomes. The team wanted security. Dan wanted to not have to talk about pay every month. I put together light-weight agreements and the topic hasn't come up since.

Hungry has evolved from a hobby into a thriving business that's doubled year on year. It doesn't look like stopping.

Dan is interviewing the most high profile people from hospitality and FMCG brands in the world. He now has the time to travel for it, taking the podcast international for the first time.

His focus is no longer on firefighting, he's all-out on growth and working on the areas of the business he loves.

The team are happy and know they have someone in their corner, available to hear and communicate their concerns.

Hungry's finances are stronger than ever, with simple systems in place to protect cash and control spending.

Within a year my role expanded to being Dan's de facto business partner, there to protect his time, sanity and business.
